RAY’S BOWLS REPORT
SPOTLIGHT ON: THE ELAND TROPHY FINAL – GOXHILL versus SCUNTHORPE
The Final of the Scunthorpe & District Bowls League ‘Eland Trophy’ team competition was contested between the new team in the league Goxhill versus Scunthorpe (current holders of the Trophy) and it was played at Railway Sports Bowls Club green. A large number of spectators attended the match during which the host Club provided Tea/Coffee and Biscuits throughout the duration of the game.
The match itself turned out to be an extremely competitively fought encounter eventually finishing with only a few shots determining the final victors. As the 21 end battle commenced it was the Goxhill team that shot out of the starting blocks and developed and early lead of 13 shots (28 to 15) as the quarter stage of the game was reached. Continuing as they started the Goxhill squad maintained their overall lead by 15 shots (48 to 33) by the halfway point in the dual. However the Scunthorpe team were in a determined mood and started to lift their game reducing their opponents lead slightly to 13 shots (65 to 52) at the three quarter point of the match. With six ends to go in this excellent match the Scunthorpe charge was in full flow and after some very competitive bowls from both teams in these final ends it was the Goxhill team that managed to hold on to secure a well-earned victory in their first entry into the Eland Trophy.
Although the Scunthorpe team were the runners-up they had fought hard to reduce Goxhill’s lead to just 8 shots (83 to 75) as the final end was played out. Following the completion of the match the Scunthorpe and District Bowls League’s President Janet Longcake (Messingham B.C.) complimented players of both teams on a quality game of bowls and congratulated the Winners Goxhill Bowls Club on their victory. The President also thanked the Railway Sports Club for hosting the Final and the excellent hospitality they provided both to the players and spectators. President Janet then presented the runners-up Trophy to Steve Blakey the Captain of Scunthorpe and then followed that with the presentation of the Eland Trophy to Ted Ashworth the Captain of the victorious Goxhill team.
